Founded as a deli in 1897 by Italian immigrant Giovanni Battista Ratto and has been family owned and run ever since. In the 1960s, Martin Durante, Ratto's great-grandson, ran the operation and in 1995 Elena Durante Voiron, Martin's daughter, took her father's place as head of the store.
